Does Medicare pay for Adult Day Care?

A: Medicaid does not pay for adult day care directly, however. Rather, Medicaid pays adult day care for specified personal care services, physical therapy, and nursing services from the list of Medicaid Covered Services that are prescribed by a physician.

It covers mental health treatments like:

  • Administration and monitoring of medication
  • Recovery from a medical crisis when prescribed by a physician
  • Outpatient mental health services by a clinic that provide adult day care

Some Part C Medicare Advantage managed care plans offer limited adult day care coverage as part of their comprehensive home care services. Medicare does not require managed care plans to offer comprehensive care services, so check with your plan to find out if your Advantage plan covers adult day care services.

Medicare partners with Medicaid to sponsor what’s called the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE). This program provides comprehensive home and community care, including adult day care, for frail elders who would otherwise require nursing home care.

Does Medicaid pay for Adult Day Care?
A: Lido Senior Club’s services are available at NO COST to eligible Medicaid recipients. The Texas Medicaid Day Activity and Health Services (DAHS) Program provides adult day care services on weekdays during daytime hours to eligible Texas residents, up to 10 hours per day. Services, such as personal care, snacks, congregate meals and social activities are provided at licensed centers throughout the state. The objective is to allow participants who would otherwise require full-time nursing home care, to receive care during normal business hours and continue living at home or in the community with their primary caregivers on nights and weekends. This allows the elders to remain living in their homes or the homes of family members while a family caregiver may continue to work during day time hours.
How do I meet the requirements to be eligible for Medicaid benefit to receive FREE adult day care services?

A: The Texas Medicaid benefit is available to all eligible Medicaid beneficiaries who meet the conditions of coverage. The state requires that Medicaid adult day health services be:

  • Ordered or requested by a physician or other medical practitioner
  • Provided to eligible beneficiaries, as determined by a patient assessment
  • Included in or consistent with a plan of care
  • Rendered by staff whose qualifications and/or supervision meet state licensing requirements
  • Supported by appropriate documentation; progress notes, flowcharts, and treatment logs
  • Beneficiaries meet attendance requirements
I am a Veteran. Will VA cover my costs?
A: Some of our centers are contracted with the VA North Texas Health Care System, complying with the VA Community Adult Day Health Care Program (CADHC) regulations. A staff member can assist a family in contacting VA to find out if you are eligible for this benefit which will pay all of the daily fees for eligible veterans.
Does insurance cover the cost of day services?
A: Almost all long term care insurance policies will cover the cost. A staff member can assist a family in verifying benefits with their Long Term Care insurance provider.
Why would I be interested in Lido Senior Club?
A: If you are the sole caregiver of a loved one who is disabled or needs senior care, experts recommend that in cases of emergencies you have a backup plan, such as adult day care services. Experts also recommend that you share this plan with your loved one so that they are emotionally prepared to face the emergency with you. In case you have an emergency situation and are in need of someone to call for your loved one for a few hours, Lido Senior Club is open Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. If they attend Lido Senior Club on a regular basis, they can become familiar with the environment, our staff, other adult day care participants and the day care services and activities we offer. As a result, when you need our adult day care services in an emergency, your loved one will most likely look forward to being with us and receive the maximum benefits of our program.
Are special diets needed to accommodate?

A: All meals we serve in our adult day care center are prepared according to the guidelines by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services. Nutrition and food services include:

  • one hot noon meal a day;
  • a mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack;
  • preparation of foods required for special diets; and
  • ietary counseling and nutrition education for the individual and his family.

If an individual has been determined to need a low or salt-free diet (as evidenced by the individual’s diagnosis or physician’s orders), the individual must be served a meal meeting the dietary requirements ordered by the physician. If a provider is adhering to the physician’s orders to provide a salt-restricted meal to the individual, but the individual says he does not want the salt-free diet, then the provider is meeting the dietary requirement as ordered by the physician. The individual can, however, choose whether to comply with the salt-restricted diet or not.

A: Yes, if a participant at Lido Senior Club is present at lunchtime, they will be served a hot meal.

What is the advantage of Lido Senior Club‘s services over assisted living, home health care, or nursing homes?

A: Here are what some experts say about the concept of adult day care services like Lido Senior Club:

“Adult day care represents a growing option for many families—one that keeps their loved ones out of nursing homes or assisted-living facilities that demand far more in the way of financial resources and may provide far less in the way of social and emotional stimulation.” Trudy Lieberman, Consumer Reports Complete Guide to Health Services for Seniors, 2000.

“Adult day centers clearly the most cost-effective and cost-efficient model of care and balances the needs of family and the growth of the elder…” Dr. John Capitman, professor of Brandeis University.

A study done by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation showed that adult day care facilities are a viable, cost-effective long-term care option as it relates to nursing homes.

“Adult day centers help keep individuals who are in need of chronic care at home, in the community, with family and friends as long as possible.” Nancy J. Cox, M.S.W., national director of Partners in Caregiving.
